How I reached Shillong in just Rs 300?

How to go Shillong

If you are a budget traveler like me and you came here to know about the cheapest way to reach Shillong or budget travel to Shillong, which is situated in the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, then read this article till the end.
In this article, I am going to share about my story on how I reached Shillong in just Rs 300. I will also tell you how you can go to Shillong in less than Rs 300.

I started my journey from West Bengal, India on 10th of July, 2023 in train to Guwahati, Assam.  On the next day, I reached to Guwahati. Then I went to Paltan Bazar bus stand, which is situated near the Guwahati Railway Station.
But unfortunately I didn't got the bus.
Buses for Shillong left early morning and I was little bit late.

From there I went to Sumo Stand which is located in the same area. I saw a Sumo was standing near the ticket counter. Then I went there and ask the driver If he is going to Shillong. He said me yes. Then I asked him about the fare to Shillong. He said that the fare for Shillong is Rs300 per person. I tried to bargain but he said that it is fixed price. Since I had no other option so I sat on his vehicle. Later on I came to know that the fare for sumo is same for all the sumos that goes from the Sumo stand.

But there was one problem. Since it was a sharing vehicle, so I had to wait untill all the seats of the Sumo were filled with the passenger. So I waited around 2 hours.
When all the seats were filled, then we started our journey. It took around 4 hours to reach Shillong.

So this was my story on how I went to Shillong in just Rs300 from Guwahati.

Now I am going to tell you how you can can go to Shillong in less then Rs300.
The cheapest way to go to Shillong is by Bus. If you go by bus, it cost only Rs179.
But the buses for Shillong leave early in the morning at around 8am. After that there is no bus you will get from Guwahati.  Some buses comes during the daytime from different places but I don't know there timing and I am not sure where stops.

There is again one problem you will face when you go by bus. If you go in Sumo or other cabs, They will drop you in police bazar, which is the centre of Shillong. But if you go by bus then they will drop you before Shillong. From there the main Shillong is around 9 km. So you have to take again another vehicle to reach to main Shillong. And let me tell one more important thing. Transportation in Shillong is very costly. If you take a cab from bus stand to the main Shillong, it will cost you around Rs300 to Rs500, depending on your bargaining Skil.

You have again one option. There is one vehicle known as Force Traveler that goes from Guwahati Paltan Bazar to Shillong. You can go in this vehicle. The fare in this vehicle from Guwahati to Shillong is 170 Rs and it leaves from Guwahati daily at 7 am in the morning. and It will drop you at Police Bazar in Shillong.

So I would suggest you to take either a sharing Sumo Which you will get whole day or you can take Force Traveler from Guwahati to Shillong. This is the most reliable way to reach Shillong. If you are not in hurry, then Just wait for some time untill the seats were filled and you are ready to go.
